"Hub" of Scott County:
Jordan earned the nickname "Hub" because of its strategic location on the river, railroad, and highway, making it a central point for transportation and commerce in Scott County. Early Development: The town's history began in the early 1850s with the construction of a sawmill by Thomas A. Holmes, and by the late 1850s, Jordan had a hotel, churches, a school, a tavern, a post office, and two mills. Incorporation: In 1872, Jordan City and Brentwood were incorporated together under the name of the village of Jordan. Commercial and Industrial Center: Jordan became a thriving commercial and industrial center, with businesses like bakeries, millinery shops, book and drug stores, harness shops, hardware stores, a post office, and an opera house. |
